Where it comes from

What it's spent on
Photos and videos of your characters, including edits and extended clips.
Creating characters, and redrawing their portrait.
Chat messages, if you don't have a membership.
Voice: voice messages and calls.
Smut Stories.

Checking your balance
Your balance is shown in the menu, on your Account page and on the Membership page.
If something fails
If a generation fails, times out or is blocked by moderation, its Spunk goes straight back to your balance. See Why did my generation fail?
